Fabric Innovation - What is Fantasy? What is Reality?
It's really cool that clothing designers are moving way beyond design and into innovating new types of fabrics. In the world of work out wear, we guess this started with Lululemon, which pioneered exotic fabrics and things like "stink-stopping Silverescent® fabric technology, powered by X-STATIC®". Does it work? We have no idea; we've always thought Lululemon stuff was way too expensive for workout gear.
And then there is Vuori, a much smaller California based workout line. An article in Essential Homme sounds more like an April Fool's joke, claiming that "the blend of wood and pulp used to make Vuori's fabric releases vitamins and minerals when you sweat, allowing for an active nutrient exchange and a top-notch workout." Fantasy or Reality? There is nothing on the Vuori website about this kind of miracle fabric, and its certainly something you would think they would promote. So maybe it's just the overactive imagination of someone associated with the brand. Or maybe not; there is so much innovation in fabrics these days, who knows?

Are You a Mid Level Drug Dealer?
Or the starting forward for the Kentucky Wildcats? We're generally not fond of celebrity endorsements - in fact, they make us puke. But this car coat from H&M, modeled by soccer star David Beckham, is kinda cool for the right person. And at $70, it's real cheap. Do not try this at home if you are under 6 feet tall. Unless you're like 5'3" and everyone trembles when you walk by cause your the baddest dude in the hood.

What to Think about Stauer?
Stauer is a catalog and online merchant for watches, jewelry, and other goods. Their stuff is cheap, the watch shown here is $80. Of course it's cheap, because they're selling in huge volumes, so nothing is going to be unique, if that bothers you. And perhaps it should, because the whole point of wearing jewelry, or watches for that matter, is a piece of personal decoration that distinguishes you in some way from everyone else. I mean, you can get the time from your phone, right? Timex watches are cheap and proud of it. Everything by Stauer is cheap but pretending to be expensive, and I think that's what really bothers us.
On the other hand, Stauer stuff is undeniably well priced. We own one of their watches, and it came as advertised. Their items look nice, but they are just copying the designs of others. If you want cheap and nice looking, shop at Stauer. If you want something off the beaten path, J Peterman is your catalog of choice.

Cool Shades for Big Spender
We have no intention of spending $500 for sunglasses, especially non-prescription ones, given that we can get very nice ones for much less from Warby Parker. But if you, superstar, are in the market for cool shades and can drop $500, then check these out. Cause they're nice.

A Sexy Look - Maybe
Are you a young woman who works out a lot and has perfectly flat stomach? Do you like it if men stare a bit at your perfectly flat stomach? If you answered yes to these questions this outfit from Donna Karan may be a good look for you, but not if you're meeting grandmom for lunch.

When we say "Maybe" what we really mean is "No!" unless you happen to be smokin hot Nicki Minaj who is the only person in the world who looks right in an outfit like this with two pastel dyed dogs in pink and blue. If you do happen to be Nicki, then "Yes!". For everyone else, do NOT try this at home.

Sexy Skin 1,000 Years Ago
This look, just skin and jewels, is not for everyone, but reminds us that hot bodies and showing a lot of flesh, and a well developed back is not exactly a new development. This sculpture from the Freer Museum in Washington is an Indian queen, circa 990.

Can You Really Afford this Jacket?
This is a varsity style jacket for men by Saint Laurent. It costs $2,390. Yes, it is cool. But should you buy it? For most people the answer is a simple no; they don't have over $2 large to spend on a jacket. But let us suppose you have just sold your app to Google, or signed with the Yankees. Should you buy this? Maybe.
Here is what you need to do first:
1) Make sure everyone you care about has enough to eat and a roof over their head. This might pertain to 1 person or 5000 people. Your call.
2) Make sure you have no debt and liquid investments of at least $250,000, which is 100X what the jacket costs. Hopefully not a problem - see Yankees/Google above.
3) Make sure you're actually going to wear the damn thing!
All good? Okay, big boy, buy away.

A Manly Duffel?
We think this is a manly duffel bag - looks cool, and made from the right field wall of the Minneapolis Metrodome - what could be more manly than that? But we've seen only the photo, not the actual product in person, so this one is just a Maybe rather than a Yes!.

Crazy is Okay in Small Doses
We like Opening Ceremony, which introduces new brands to the fashion world, and also has it's own branded line of clothing. They have a lot of crazy stuff, which sometimes works, and often does not. Let's take this outfit, a sweatshirt and shorts. If you happen to be in a punk rock band trying to go upscale, this look might work. But not for anyone else. However, if you wore just the top, with faded jeans, or just the shorts, with a white Hanes tee shirt, that could rock. The old rule is one fancy at a time. And that rule works with crazy as well.
As for the prices, at $415 for the sweatshirt and $245 for shorts, that's crazy too, but a different kind of crazy.
Pick your crazy carefully.
