Coaches will sacrifice any standards to win. That's because most of them are treated like Kleenex. They are used and discarded. When I coached at American, my graduation rate was 100% the first couple years, but we weren't winning. I was on the verge of getting fired. I went out and recruited some kids I knew were going to have trouble academically at American. We started winning. Our graduation rate dropped to 80 percent. That may sound good at some schools, but it's a 20% drop off at a school that prides itself on academics. I was offered a new contract and a raise. Why? I was winning games.
