The collection he amassed over the years was thus a varied one, including both extremely rare objects and others that were valueless except for the pleasure they gave their owner. He kept some known fakes and several other pieces of dubious ancestry simply because he enjoyed them. His house was not, as it was sometimes called, a museum, but rather a home, and the things displayed in it were not collected so much for their rarity or potential market value as because he wanted to live with them.
