The middle class relationship to money derives from the Protestant work ethic, which holds that hard work and saving money will yield a better life than the one your parents had. But the working class and the poor are being encouraged to revert to an older, more anachronistic ethic, the Puritan Calvinist one - that destructive theology promugulated by the Pilgrims, who believed good works were irrelevant: God simply elected you to go to Heaven (or win the Megabucks jackpot). Your job was to wait (and buy more tickets.)
