Lately, economists and politicians alike have been making noises about the rise of the “gig economy,” in which freelance workers earn a living by piecing together on-demand work opportunities. These “gigs” are typically facilitated by online platforms like Uber, Airbnb, Etsy and TaskRabbit. While Hillary Clinton recently cautioned that the “gig economy” is “raising hard questions about workplace protections and what a good job will look like in the future,” a recent Wall Street Journal analysis sees little evidence that such an economy has actually materialized.
