A masterpiece of Inca architecture, Machu Picchu is the best example of the full range of Inca skill in stonework, and the most famous monument of ancient South America. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There is a fair amount of walking up steps and on uneven paths. We were glad we had good walking shoes. The train ride to and from Cusco was 5 hours each way, comfortably resting and dining in the Bond-type dining car or laughing, singing, and dancing in the bar car at the back of the train.
