The technology for guns that can only be fired by their owners, thus preventing accidental deaths, exists right now. But as politicians have tried to force this technology on the gun buying public, the gun lobby has fought back, fearful that smart guns will lead to the outlawing of conventional weapons. So you can’t buy a smart gun right now.  This is the sort of convoluted story that is all too common in politics.
