Under the initial contract between Microsoft and IBM, Big Blue agreed to fund most of the development costs of MS-DOS, but only Microsoft was allowed to license the system to third parties. This was the killer clause. Microsoft's decision to go for the license was a decision of brilliance and bravado, among the people canvassed for this book it was the most often mentioned great decision.
