I had met the increasingly apoplectic Rcoker years earlier, in 1996, as he unsuccessfully battled AOL by harping on its shoddy accounting practices. He had later attempted the same thing with a range of Internet stocks, and kept losing - despite the fact that he was entirely correct about the precarious state of their finances. 'It was a mass hysteria and, honestly, if you tried to be a cautious voice, it was not productive, because your caution was drowned out by the cheers. The thing is, if you got looser and looser in behavior, the more you were rewarded for it.' Rocker reflected in 2003.
