  • It is only as a man puts off from himself all external support, and stands alone, that I see him to be strong and to prevail.

Calling on Science for a Winning Formula Wednesday, February 13, 2008; E08 A magazine photo spread of Chinese superstar Liu Xiang, the reigning world champion and world-record holder in the 110-meter hurdles, hangs conspicuously on the office door of Peter Vint, a senior sport technologist for the U.S. Olympic Committee with a doctorate in biomechanics. Vint, who works at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, is absolutely focused on finding ways to beat Liu and other top rivals of the United States. As the USOC's team of science experts moves away from a past that was heavy on brilliant thinking but light on the practical and useful application of those ideas, Vint is helping to lead the change. Fewer than two years ago, the USOC reorganized its structure to give every Olympic national governing body daily access to a team of experts -- Vint is one of them -- that includes a strength and conditioning coach, medical director, sports dietician, two sports psychologists, a performance technologist and research assistant. All will fly across the globe -- or merely pick up the phone -- to handle problems or provide expertise. Last year, Vint sat down with Jonty Skinner, USA Swimming's performance science director, who brought up what Vint described vaguely as "something new." Said Skinner, according to Vint, "I wonder how that actually affects performance." Responded Vint, "We can measure that." And so they did. They undertook a joint study at the training center last fall. They devised what Vint described as a "measurement thing," and Olympic megastar Michael Phelps assisted with the testing. The new "thing" helped Phelps and other swimmers, according to Vint, who hopes it will make a difference for the United States in Beijing. Prior to the USOC's change in structure, Vint said, such a partnership would never have emerged. As for specifics about the breakthrough . . . "I can't tell you," Vint said. Despite a few minutes of prodding, Vint declined to explain. "I can tell you in September," Vint said. "I'm not even allowed to discuss it outside of this building." -- Amy Shipley
