The holiday movie that will determine the future of American entertainment may not be the one you think. It could be an obscure buddy-cop movie starring Will Smith as a hardscrabble police officer in a fictionalized Los Angeles inhabited by fairies, elves and orcs. The film “Bright” was produced by Netflix with production budget of around $90 million. It is showing in select theaters, but will mainly be seen on the streaming app. It will be a key test for an Netflix bull case – that its user data and algorithms can accurately predict user tastes. Netflix says it will spend up to $8 billion on content in 2018.
