A half-century ago, American households spent an average of 2.4 hours a day preparing their food; now they spend around 30 minutes. A big reason for this shift is the prevalence of what the industry calls “ready meals”—chilled or frozen dinners, ranging from pizzas and stuffed pastas to entire plates with side dishes arrayed around meat or fish.
