Instead of scheduling a meeting, Hadden walked to the golddomed World building on Park Row, slipped past Swope’s secretary, and marched into his office. Swope looked up from his reading, expecting to see the managing editor. “Who are you?” he bellowed. “My name is Briton Hadden, and I want a job,” Hadden said. Swope promptly ordered Hadden to leave. “Mr. Swope,” Hadden replied, “you’re interfering with my destiny.” Intrigued, Swope asked Hadden what his destiny entailed. Hadden told Swope that he planned to make the news easy to understand for the first time. The magazine he planned to launch would summarize all the essential facts everybody ought to know. But first, Hadden said, he wished to work for Swope. Other young men had come to Swope and asked for a job on the World, but they had usually requested to be columnists. Hadden had no such fancy notions, and it seemed to Swope that his ideas made sense. “All right,” Swope said, “You have a job.” Hadden rushed to his desk on his first day of work and barked out introductions. “A gay young sprig,” chuckled a nearby obituaries writer before falling back to sleep. Within a couple of days, Hadden was circling his desk and growling, “I’m not getting anywhere here.” Wilner, Isaiah.
