Father in law, a prosperous banker and rancher, helped him start first store. Creative thinking. Contrary to the thinking of his day, he believed that small rural towns could support a large discount store, and Wal-Mart was started in these rural towns.

  • He was the starting quarterback for his high school football team and led them to the state title in 1935. Sam majored in Economics at the University of Missouri.
