The risk of having unprotected sex and getting pregnant three days prior to ovulation is 15%. You will have a 12% chance on the ovulation day.

In the real world, large studies show that women who engage in unprotected sex during mid-cycle have a much lower chance of getting pregnant as the risk is around 5.8%.

How do you calculate your safe days.

menstrual cycle

Calculation of the safe days is a method of birth control where one can determine the days that portend the lowest risk of pregnancy in the event of unprotected penetrative vaginal intercourse. This method coupled with the withdrawal method are a good birth control method devoid of the various complications related to hormonal contraceptives and intrauterine devices.

When calculating the safe days, we divide the menstrual cycle into three phases; pre-ovulation, ovulation and post-ovulation phases. Your ovulation days are the days when you are most likely to get pregnant. As such the safest days will be farthest from date of ovulation. These days are day 1 to day 7 and day 21 to day 28.

This method will work better for those females who have a regular cycle as opposed to those who do not. Combination of this method with the withdrawal method has an additive effect on its effectiveness as a method of birth control. This is because the sperm can survive in the birth canal for up to 8 days. This implies that ejaculation inside the woman 5 days before ovulation poses a risk of pregnancy.
